Dear COBA Members;
The Nassau Police Foundation donated approximately 150 Office Chairs for use by our Correction Officers throughout our facility.
I was advised that this donation was coordinated between Chief Ron Walsh and the Police Foundation to give to our Officers and for COBA to distribute them as we saw appropriate.
The delivery was scheduled for today. As we were waiting for the delivery, I was advised that the Sheriff and her attorneys upstairs questioned where the donation came from and whether it should be accepted. The attorneys promptly jumped into action, denied the distribution of these chairs, got Mineola involved and completely mucked up the works. Long story short, this generous donation by the Nassau Police Foundation now has to be approved by the Legislature so there's no question as to the validity of the donation, where they came from and what the reason was behind this donation. I got into it with Mineola about the absurdity of this action by our Dept and that this is another perfect example of the problems we are having with the current administration.
A simple generous donation by the Police Foundation of all things can't be done without hiding behind attorneys as was done "yet again" today, then having everything screech to a halt.
The County Atty's Office is now involved and a form letter has to be completed and submitted to the Legislature for their approval of this donation at their next meeting. Only after that, can the chairs be handed out. In the meantime, the chairs were delivered, we inventoried them and secured them. Once the Legislature rubber stamps the memo, the chairs can be distributed.
The next Leg Meeting is on Aug 5th.
And the beat goes on........................
Sincerely,
Brian Sullivan, COBA President
