Dealing With Stress During This Crisis: Help is Available

April 7, 2020

Dear COBA Members/Retirees;

We have all been under an incredible amount of stress during this crisis. Whether you are bravely working the front lines, dealing with the illness yourself or a loved ones illness, or coping with the loss of a loved one without the ability to properly grieve the way we would normally expect to.

In normal times of crisis there are numerous ways to find help through counseling or other referrals. During this time of "Social Distancing" a lot of avenues may appear to be cut off. This does not mean that you should suffer in silence or alone.

There are still methods to get assistance in dealing with anxiety, grief, depression addiction etc.

First and foremost is our Employee Assistance Program. The Union has been in daily contact with EAP Liaison Joe Collins regarding these issues. Numerous Officers have been given direction and guidance during this time. Even with "Social Distancing" many providers have setup Teleconferencing with old and new clients to assist them in their time of need.

Given the peer counseling aspect of our EAP Program that has grown into a fantastic tool for our officers, I always recommend EAP first. Programs were put in place for Law Enforcement only and countless connections have been implemented for referrals of all types. Our EAP has never been better.

If you need help in any way related to mental health, alcohol/drug use, anxiety, depression etc do not hesitate to reach out. Help is available.

Joe Collins can be reached at the EAP office at the following number:

  • 516-571-7007 or call the Communications Unit 572-4195 to be put in contact with the Union "On Call" Officer for help.

Other assistance that is also available:

  • Domestic Violence Hotline: 516-542-0404
  • Veterans Assistance: 516-572-6565

All calls are confidential. Do not hesitate to reach out for help.

Always In Unity;

Brian Sullivan, COBA President
