Dear COBA Members;
Following yesterday's announcement that Governor Kathy Hochul signed TWO monumental Bills into Law, specific to Nassau County Correction Officers, came the question of whether COBA would continue to offer "No Endorsement" in the County Executive's race.
Originally, our position was clear. Although we have a working relationship with Laura Curran, our Members are still without a contract, our longevity issue is still being litigated and we continue to deal with staffing problems at the jail. These are all very real issues that need to be addressed and rectified, sooner than later.
But, the events of the last 24 hours cannot be ignored either.
Not only did Laura Curran support and sign these measures, binding the County for our benefit, she then lobbied the Governor extensively to sign them into law. This is no simple task as we saw full well under former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
We will continue the arduous work of negotiating a new contract while still dealing with a Control Board. We will continue the fight litigating for our Longevity. But the work that was done on behalf of our Members in securing these two new pension benefits cannot be ignored either.
That is why COBA has chosen to endorse Laura Curran at this late hour with our support in her re-election bid for County Executive.
It should be obvious that politics can never play a role in who this union supports. Only results should matter. Yesterday's Bill signings were actual tangible results that benefit our Members and we will always support those who support us in the ways that matter.
Always In Unity;
Brian Sullivan, COBA President
