On December 14th, 2022 at 1pm, the Nassau County Legislature will conduct a special Public Safety Committee Hearing regarding the Correctional Facility. This meeting is intended to address chronic mismanagement, understaffing, security concerns, consolidation and underfunding particularly after the appointment of Mike Sposato as Commissioner.
Your entire COBA Board will be in attendance. COBA has fought an unending battle with administration after administration to fight these types of issues. Correction Officers throughout New York State have recently been put greatly in harms way because of Bail Laws and particularly due to HALT. Mismanagement, cost cutting and consolidation only amplify the problems we face. This upcoming hearing is the perfect opportunity to have our voices heard on the record in public.
This is where you (The Membership) come in. COBA wants reports from those of you on the front line to illustrate what you are facing as a Correction Officer in Nassau County. Not gripes or opinions, we want personal fact based accounts of what you perceive is wrong with the management of this facility. The purpose of these front line accounts will be to provide our elected officials with information regarding the extent and seriousness of what we face daily in our end of the law enforcement spectrum and how your lives are affected by managerial decisions that only appear to concentrate on cost cutting and not on the health and safety of both Officers and Inmates alike.
Again, please limit your responses to brief factual concerns and avoid personal conflicts or opinions. No names will be used in the reporting of any issues to avoid any concerns of retaliation or the possibility of discipline for discussing internal issues in public. COBA’s Board has certain protections when discussing issues externally that our members do not have. The upcoming meeting is open to the public, but has limited seating. Feel free to attend and see your union in action working on your behalf. Email all submissions to:NassauCOBA@gmail.com
In Unity;
Brian Sullivan,
COBA President
