Dear COBA Member,
I am sending this message in order to quell some of the sensational rumors that have been circulating around the facility in the last week in regards to Ancillary Units and to give an update on the IME used to resolve Police Surgeon / 207-C disputes.
Ancillary Units
The Administration is looking at all possible solutions to staffing the facility in the upcoming summer months.
While we understand the need to ensure all posts are covered during the summer, we will not support a solution that negatively affects an Officers awarded unit and schedule. We will continue to advocate for all Officers both in Security and Ancillary Units. This is an ongoing and fluid discussion and as more develops, we will keep you informed.
Independent Medical Examiner
Second, as you all know we have been without an Independent Medical Examiner for some time now. I stood firm that our Union would not sacrifice the future rights of injured members to help the County and Department fix a problem of their own making. The County originally wanted a 4-year contract with a new vendor with the ability to extend twice at 1-year increments at the County’s SOLE discretion.
Yesterday I signed a Memorandum of Agreement with a new IME for the remainder of 2025. Basically a 6 month “trial period” to see how this company operates and deals with our members.
Inside this MOA it included:
2 Orthopedics
1 Neurologist
1 Psychologist
On December 31, 2025, this agreement expires and can ONLY be extended with consent from BOTH the County and COBA.
