PRESS RELEASE FROM THE NASSAU COUNTY SHERIFF'S CORRECTION OFFICERS BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION

NASSAU COUNTY COBA PRESIDENT PETER LILLI CALLS THE INDICTMENT OF A HIGH-RANKING CIVILIAN NURSE, WHO SMUGGLED A RAZOR BLADE TO AN INMATE IN THE NASSAU COUNTY JAIL, A CRITICAL STEP IN HOLDING CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES FULLY ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR CRIMES COMMITTED IN NASSAU COUNTY'S JAIL

EAST MEADOW, NY- The following statement can be attributed to Nassau County COBA President Peter A. Lilli:

"Today's indictment of a high-ranking nurse, who brazenly smuggled a weapon into our facility that could have been used to seriously injure or kill one of our officers, or other inmates, is definitely a step in the right direction in holding civilian employees in our facility fully accountable for the crimes they commit in our facility. Following an intensive investigation by our Internal Affairs Unit, it was discovered that this nurse was on probation for a Felony DWI.

The investigation further revealed a persistent pattern of criminal conduct prior to her arrest, where it was revealed that she made over 450 calls to an inmate, putting money into his account under an alias and a fictitious address. In order to prevent incidents like this from happening again, it's imperative for there to be the highest level of accountability in the civilian hiring process. To that end, we propose having our professional investigators and gang intelligence officers involved from the very beginning of the hiring process to ensure the safety and security of everyone in our facility. Our officers who uncovered this weapon should be commended for their vigilance, which almost certainly helped to save lives.

We thank Sheriff Anthony LaRocca for holding civilians, who commit crimes in our facility, accountable for their actions. We also thank District Attorney Anne Donnelly for bringing this individual to justice and we hope that she will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Moving forward, we will continue to collaborate with the Sheriff's Department on ways to bolster the security of our facility."
