COBA President Testifies at Legislative Budget Hearing Re: Jail Staffing Crisis and Lack of Training E

October 6, 2021

Dear COBA Members;

Please click the video link below to view testimony I presented at today's Public Safety Budget Hearing at the Nassau County Legislature in Mineola.

The issues include the County's continual failure to properly staff the Division of Correction, their failure to address the hiring process itself and the need to have proper lists of candidates ready for hire.

I also testified to the lack of proper training of our Members, particularly in the supervisory ranks, as well as the liability incurred by the County for this continual failure regarding training.

Also discussed was next year's looming implementation of HALT Legislation.

What the effects will be of the very real probability of a rise in violence in our jail and Jails/Prisons all over New York State, with the ending of Administrative Segregation as we know it and the inability to separate violent predatory inmates.

We urge all COBA Members to watch, be aware and be educated on these issues and all issues that affect us as Nassau County Correction Officers.

Also in attendance was Sheriff Dzurenda and his staff, who answered questions and inquiries from the Legislators regarding my testimony and conditions at the jail in general.

Always in Unity;

Brian Sullivan, COBA President
